To the first edition of this site.
Ever since the dawn of time, humankind has sought to create likenesses of themselves and record the places in which they exist. Then in search of the meanings of life and the universe, humans used art to narrate stories depicting birth, life and societal influences. The world's religions realised the power that could be harnessed from the use of symbolic representation and advanced visual language to encode ideas, reinforcing and spreading dogma across their realms. Political institutions use art to celebrate traditions. Dissidents use art to critique them. Art and visual language mutated into cinema, media, design and advertising. The study of the structure and effect of visual language continues today.
